Product Description:

The $20 MCMVII (1907) Proof Ultra High Relief has been a significant rarity ever since the day it was coined. Long considered the most beautiful and perhaps the most desirable coin in the world, it was conceived by President Theodore Roosevelt who commissioned the foremost sculptor of the age, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to emulate the finest ancient Greek and Roman coiners. Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), who had done extensive commissions for many important projects including for the Worlds Columbian Exposition (Chicago, 1893), replied that he would be pleased to follow the coinage concepts of ancient Greece. After much thought, preparation and debate with traditional coiners, some 20 specimens of this unique design were finally struck for presentation to the President and other dignitaries. Incredibly it took nine distinct blows from a hydraulic press to bring the relief up to the height required. Several specimens are now impounded in museums or lost. Of the under a dozen specimens known today, this is the only one graded a new perfect gem PROOF 69!
